Swine Flu

Swine Flu

Will Swine Flu Mutate this Winter?
Australia has just had its winter; it has only a third of the population of Britain but has had twice the number of deaths of swine flu already!

Who is Most at Risk?
It seems 18 – 35 seems to be the main age range, but it can effect any age. Swine is highly contagious and travels from person to person, like a cold and other viruses it spreads through droplets that come out of the nose or mouth when someone coughs or sneezes. Flu viruses can live for up to 2 days!

If you are near someone (1m) you can breathe it in, or if you touch it on hard surfaces and then touch your face, it can enter your system. Its human and you can’t catch from pigs. Face masks are unnecessary if you are healthy and out and about. Infected people should wash their hands to help prevent the spread; soap and water will help but a sanitiser like SafeHands will really help kill those bugs.

Signs of Swine Flu
High temperature of at least 38 degrees, plus two other signs; cough, fatigue, headache, aching muscles, upset stomach /sickness, loss of appetite, dry throat.

What Happens to Infected Patients?
As the infection spreads, the sickness and temperature become very unpleasant, some suffers with asthma have difficulty breathing as their lungs fill with mucus and fluid. The worse cases will need Eckmo treatment (this is where a machine oxygenates the blood instead of the lungs), there are only 5 adult eckmo beds in the whole of the UK and only 15 child versions.

Prof Mervyn Singer an intensive care specialist says "with 19,000 deaths predicted from an estimated 67,000 sick patients, many will be needing intensive care beds and there are currently only 2000 available in the UK".

Treatments
Anti Viral Drugs like Tamiflu and Relemsa can have side effects that for some can outweigh the benefits. But these drugs may only offer small benefits for children under 12, teatment may mean only getting better by one or just half a day quicker with drug treatment and 1 in 20 children can have side effects!

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says Healthy children over 5 shouldn’t need it unless they are at risk of severe illness, e.g. children with underlying health issues. Side effects include feeling under the weather and feeling sick.

Flu Vaccine
The Government is stock piling the vaccine with 132 Million doses – enough for 2 jabs for each person. First inline will be those between 6 months and 65 years old who are at risk with asthma, diabetes, and immune disorders (approx 5Million people). Next are pregnant women and Front line Health workers. All vaccines carry a risk!

The Effect on Business
Germs are spread though hand contact more than any other method. E.g. an infected IT worker touching staff keyboards after sneezing into their hands can infect dozens of people in short space of time. Touching were someone has sneezed can also result in infection. Think of lift buttons, door handles, shaking hands, cup handles, drinks machine buttons etc.

Have a contingency plan for absence – can staff work from home? Businesses need to try and prevent the spread of illness through the workplace. Managers or those responsible need to identify sick people quickly and send them home. You may want to install hand sanitiser to enable people to effectively cleanse their hands and kill germs on a regular basis. Encourage people to use tissues to catch sneezes and coughs and bin those germs.
